Truth, Baseball, and the Postmodern Mind

"Pilate saith unto Him, 'What is truth?' (John 18:38)"

I recently read this story in the book Emergent Hope. Three umpires are discussing balls and strikes. The first umpire says, "I call them as they are." To which the second replies, "Well, I call them as I see them." Umpire three, obviously annoyed, says, "You guys are both all wrong! They ain't nothing 'til I call them!"

Since I'm a pastor & a big fan of baseball (Boston Red Sox) I thought this was absolutely fantastic & hilarious! Who says there's no sermon illustrations to be used from the modern world?

I think it pretty much describes baseball and the rest of thinking life in our culture , doesn't it?
